Spirit Halloween 2026: Store Locator, Costumes, Animatronics & Decor

Spirit Halloween is the largest Halloween specialty retailer in North America, with over 1,400 seasonal pop-up stores that open in empty retail spaces each fall and close after the holiday. The stores take over empty mall storefronts, big-box vacancies, and former department stores — transforming them into full Halloween superstores from August through November 1.

The company started in 1983 and is now owned by Spencer Gifts. The seasonal model is the whole business: stores open progressively from late July and early August, reach full scale by late September, and close on or just after November 1, with everything inside marked down in the final days. A Spirit Halloween store arriving in a vacant storefront has become a cultural sign that fall has started.

Inside, the stores stock ready-made costumes for every age, accessories, makeup, masks, yard décor, the famous in-store animatronics, and a wall of trick-or-treat supplies. It's the one-stop Halloween shop — and the only place where you can walk in, try on a mask, see a seven-foot animatronic move, and leave with a whole costume.

Spirit Halloween stores begin opening in late July and early August 2026, with the largest wave opening through August and September. By early October, nearly every location is open. Hours extend as the holiday approaches: early-season stores may open late morning and close at 8pm, while October locations typically run 10am to 9pm or later, with extended hours the final week. Stores close November 1 — some November 2 — and everything left goes on clearance the last day.

The lesson: shop early for the best selection. The popular adult costume sizes, the big animatronics, and the in-demand masks sell out by mid-October. The best décor is gone by the last weekend. If you want something specific, find your store in September.

1. Costumes — Spirit Halloween carries licensed and original costumes for adults, women, men, teens, kids, toddlers, and babies, plus plus sizes. The licensed movie and TV costumes (horror villains, superheroes, classic monsters) are the strongest part of the selection. Buy early — popular sizes go first.

2. Animatronics — Spirit Halloween is famous for its animatronics: motorized, sound-activated yard and porch figures that move and talk when someone walks by. They range from $30 tabletop pieces to $300+ life-size figures. They're the centerpiece of a yard display, and the popular ones sell out by mid-October.

3. Yard and porch décor — Inflatables, tombstones, fog machines, string lights, and themed scene setters. The lawn inflatables (ghosts, grim reapers, pumpkins) are the most popular and the fastest to sell out.

4. Makeup and accessories — Face paint, prosthetics, colored hairspray, fangs, wigs, and the small accessories that turn a closet costume into a full look. The makeup wall is the best in any Halloween store.

The advantage of Spirit Halloween is trying before you buy. You can put on a mask, feel a costume's fabric, see an animatronic move in person, and walk out with the whole look the same day. The disadvantage is price and selection depth — online retailers carry more sizes, more variations, and often lower prices, especially for basic costumes.
